It's my birthday today - 2 July, the central day of the year. I didn't feel too old but then I read
this article which I found quite amusing. The invention of the Walkman wasn't
that long ago, surely?
Best quote of the article is:
It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the
tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the
metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two
different types of cassette.
Haha - genre-specific metal/normal switch.
I had a walkman when I was a kid. It was a black clunky thing - my brother had a super whizzy purple one with Sonic the Hedgehog on the front. I only ever used to listen to a very small collection of cassettes anyway, since my musical knowledge was VERY limited. Spice Girls, Abba, one specific Beatles cassette, Fleetwood Mac, and 'Round the Horne'. NOTHING else. My brother would only listen to the greatest hits of Simply Red, over and over and over until if you heard Stars one more time you'd have to punch him.
We were strange children. I honestly don't remember the metal/normal switch though.
