Holiday Planning

I've got this great idea for a holiday that I want to do at some point in the future. It involves:

  • Claire and I lending Sam to his grandparents for a couple of weeks

  • Fitting what small luggage we can into the MR2 - we should be able to stretch to a couple of toothbrushes and a pack-a-mac I reckon.

  • Catching the ferry to France

  • Seeing how many countries in Europe we can drive round in a counteranticlockwise circular tour with a bit of messing around zigzagging over on the East side. And with the roof down, naturally.

  • Neccessarily we will be staying in hotels en-route.



The exact route will need to be carefully planned but for a grand total of 15 countries I envisage it going something like:


  1. Down the west coast of France

  2. Over mountains into Spain

  3. Maybe crossing over as far as Portugal but that's a large detour for one country so maybe not.

  4. Cross mountains back to South coast of France

  5. Cross mountains into Italy. Does anyone know the name of the pass that was used in the Italian Job? The one with the tunnels that have JCBs at the end? I want to do that road.

  6. Cross border into Slovenia

  7. Down a bit to Croatia

  8. East a bit more into Hungary

  9. North to Slovakia

  10. North again to Czech Republic

  11. South a tad into Austria

  12. West to Switzerland - doing lots more mountains

  13. North to Germany

  14. On to Belgium via Luxembourg

  15. North to Holland

  16. Finally West back to France, and return via Channel tunnel to Blighty.



Now I need to work out how many miles that is, and how long it's going to take. I fear the answer might be "quite a lot and quite long" so some trimming down might be required. And some persuasion of parents might also be required for the first step (hello mum!).

I think the road you're looking for in 5 is the Col du Petit St Bernard. It's in France.

Gosh! I have no idea where that word came from. I didn't even think about it when I wrote it.

I'd change it to anticlockwise but then your comment won't make any sense so I'll leave it in its full embarassing wrongful glory for all to see.

If you can fit it in, I really, really recommend the St. Gotthard between Switzerland and Italy. I've crossed it several times and it's absolutely stunnng. I'd rate it as the best of all the Swiss alpine passes.

the only thing I would change about that is to do the italian job part in a ferrari. May well render the holiday a little more expensive!

Yurp is bigger than you might think. It took us 3 days to get to St Tropez the other week. You'll end up using the motorways.
I wanted to take M's MG but we had too much luggage and had to take Justin to LHR on the way. Ideally a Citroen DS would be the car of choice for your trip;-)
You've missed Poland: A fine country with gorgeous women.
MR2? Say that in French and you get the french word for "shit" hahahahaha

I see that according to a recent survey, 50% of childcare is done by Grandparents. As we contribute nothing or next to nothing to these statistics I will gladly do my bit towards the grand scheme. but before he is a teenager!

If you go in summer will you really need a pak-a-mak?

I'm really disappointed that two people have beaten me to complaining about counter clockwise. Next you'll be calculating how much "gas" your car will be using (none at all unless you're talking about the oxygen that meixes with the petrol).

I think we should start looking in gadget shops for clever foldy out things to stash away in our non existent storage spaces - have you seen those credit card sized washing machines?
