During my recent research looking at where to buy a kit to build a
Congreve Clock - a hideously inaccurate but fascinating timepiece - I got diverted learning all about the
Clock of the Long Now. Imagine that - a clock that is designed to keep time for 10,000 years! I remember seeing the prototype in the Science Museum in London recently but not really realising what it was all about.
And then I followed another link and learned about the
pitch drop experiment. I was disappointed to see that nobody has ever witnessed a drop fall, but if my extrapolation is correct then as long as I watch the
webcam on 20 September 2009 (this is possibly a date that is too early since it looks like things are slowing down) I might see the next one and the fifth to occur in my lifetime.
After that I followed a different link to read about a piece of music by John Cage called
As Slow As Possible. This is currently being performed in the St. Burchardi church, Halberstadt, Germany and involves 22 month long chords. I'd hate to be an organist playing this and hitting the wrong note.
